The Redentore Archipelago

From Salottobuono project statement:
“We propose to focus on the Festa del Redentore, one of the most powerful expressions of how “scenes of public life” are still being generated in the city of Venice. We will observe the overlapping of religious and popular rules, we will study the structures at different scales, we will design temporary architectures to support and expand both ancient and contemporary rituals.”

My research stemmed from the Triumphal Arch (Arco Trionfale), placed at the mouth of the San Marco Basin to celebrate the arrival of Napoleon to Venice in 1808. Further inspired by the procession from Venice to Giudecca during the Redentore, I wanted to create a portal at the same location as the Triumphal Arch, marking the “entrance” to the festivities. The portal is an arch created by a continuous loop of material, i.e., a mobius strip. The flowing nature of the portal contrasts the rigid geometry and proportions of the Arco Trionfale and the facade of Il Redentore, ushering in a new generation of rituals surrounding the Festa del Redentore.
